Cortlandt Man Used Pickaxe To Break Into Yorktown Home, Police Say

A 39-year-old man is behind bars after police say he used a pickaxe to break into a home in Northern Westchester.

It happened on Thursday, Aug. 29 at around 7 a.m. when police officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a Yorktown home.

Yorktown Police say an investigation revealed that John B. Tompkins of Cortlandt Manor allegedly forcibly entered the residence using the pickaxe.

Tompkins then allegedly further damaged the front door and a couch having a total value of $4,000, police said.

Tompkins, who police say was located a short distance from the residence, was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary (a Class B felony), criminal mischief (a Class D felony) and criminal possession of a weapon (a Class A misdemeanor).

An order of protection was placed on behalf of the victim.

Tompkins, who was unable to post $10,000 bail, was turned over to the Westchester County Department of Corrections. He's due to appear in Yorktown Justice Court on Thursday, Sept. 5.
